Micah

I came across Landon as I ordered a drink at the bar. I’d left Sarai resting in bed, knowing I couldn’t leave her for long.

“So, I see you’ve enjoyed my gift. The Widow was enticing after all.”

“The Widow?” I arched a brow and stared at him.

“Yes, that’s what they’ve been calling her around town. I think if they don’t give her a name it makes it easier for them to talk about her. Did she finally tell you why she came searching for you?”

“She came searching for me?”

He shook his head, taking a swig of his beer. “Fuck! That girl is a firecracker. Nearly killed me when I denied knowing you and she still hasn’t opened her mouth yet.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Landon?”

“Look man, she’s been through a lot of shit in these last years. Her story ain’t mine to tell, but I suggest you start asking questions.”

“If you didn’t trust her why’d you bring her to me?”

“It’s not that I don’t trust her.” He looked at me then. “She’s a good girl, she’s just been through a lot. She’s not the type of woman you can just play with and discard and I’d hate to see her get hurt again. Make sure you want something serious with Sarai before you start making promises you can’t keep.”

I nodded at Trent who handed me my drink. “What exactly did she go through?”

Landon leaned back against the bar and looked over at me. “Her husband just died. Meanest motherfucker you’ll ever come across. I’m gonna be honest, I hadn’t seen that girl in years, and suddenly she appears around town and standing in my bar asking about you.”

I gulp down my drink and signal for another. “And what makes you think she went through something.”

“Silvestre was a rough man. This is a small town, Micah, and it’s hard to keep secrets among these folks. There’s nothin’ else to do here but stir up fires. Word around town was that her father had sold her off to Silvestre for a turn in investment. During that time, she was being used as his slave.”

I gripped the tumbler that was set in front of me as I listened to Landon talk. What he said to me only confirmed her need for submission. If this is what her life had been, she’s been manipulated into believing that this was the only way she could love and be loved.

“Poor thing was probably beaten and broken down. How she sustained ten years of marriage to that fucker, I’ll never understand. But I’m glad she got away.”

“Are you certain of what you’re telling me?”

Landon turned to me, his featured looked troubled. “Trust me when I tell you that you have a broken bird on your hands. Treat her well, Micah. She doesn’t know this world, she doesn’t know any better. All she’s known is bitterness and cruelty.”

He finished his beer and then gave me a reassuring slap on the back before wandering off. Landon was a good guy, and he didn’t talk out of his ass.
